The purpose of hygiene certificates is to help prevent the spread of events that may affect international public health. The regulations concerning Ship Sanitation Certificates (hygiene) is an international arrangement which is founded in the International Health Regulations. Ships of a certain size sailing in international waters must be able to present a valid ship sanitation certificate upon request.

The Norwegian Directorate of Health has the overall administrative responsibility for hygiene certificates for ships in Norwegian ports and sets tariffs that apply to the whole country. For more information on the International Health Regulations, approved ports and current rates, see The Norwegian Directorate of Health's web site about Ship Sanitation Certificates.

For details, see checklist in WHO’s Handbook for Inspection of Ships and Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificates.
